For a few months, the desert had lived in my imagination through the pages of Wilfred Thesiger's Arabian Sands. His words, his images, and his quiet reverence for the Empty Quarter had inspired something in me long before I set foot in the Kingdom. I knew that if I ever came to Arabia, I would begin my journey exactly where his journey had also started: deep in the Rub' al. Khali, the largest uninterrupted sand desert on Earth. So on my first trip to Saudi Arabia, I didn't go to a city. I went straight into the dunes.
For two weeks, I traveled with bedouin guides from a local tribe whose roots run generations deep into this desert land. They welcomed me not as a tourist, but as a a guest and eventually a lifelong friend till this day - offering stories, guidance, tea by the fire, and a window into their life.
Everyday unfolded in its own quiet way; moving through the dunes, learning the meaning of patience and stillness, listening to stories of ancestors who crossed these dunes, observing how deeply the desert shaped character and traditions.
As a photographer, I came not only for the incredible landscapes but also for the human connection to this remote place. I documented; the lives of bedouin men and families, their relationship with camels and nature, the geomorphology of the dunes and how the wind sculpts landscapes that change daily, ancient pathways and forgotten wells once used by caravans.
What stayed with me the most was how the silence of the Empty Quarter isn't empty at all. It is full. Full of history, stories, life and an overwhelming sense of peace and clarity I have not experienced anywhere else.
I did not know it then, but I felt it, standing on one of the dunes overlooking a lake, but those two weeks would become the beginning of my life's work in Arabia. The beginning of a story I continue to tell through my lens. A story about culture, heritage, landscapes and the people of the Arabian Peninsula.
The Empty Quarter wasn't just a place I visited, it was a place that shaped by purpose.
